SHAME ON YOU, MCQUEEN - AN OPEN LETTER

Dear Lee,

I have been a long time fan of your work, but your recent Nazi ad for your diffusion line McQ, published in the "Happiness" (#270) issue of i-D magazine is shameful and outrageous. If you were trying to bring scandalous attention following the first rule of PR, "bad PR is still PR," you could have at least done someing excusable, say like the Lust Supper Diesel ad, which was kind of cute. I can't even call this ad something done in bad taste. It is horrible. There is no reason to put a Nazi eagle and swastika, and the Iron Cross on that poor model. These things symbolize nothing but hatred, suffering, and murder. Maybe you are one of those great admirers of Hitler? Is that why your head is shaved? Are you an anti-Semite? Do you hate gypsies and Eastern Europeans? I want to know. I am posting the ad on my blog, you can sue me for copyright infringement if you'd like - maybe you will get even more publicity and sell more clothes this way, not a bad deal. I am also posting some images of the Holocaust right next to your ad, so my dear readers get a reminder of what these Nazi symbols have really stood for.

Cheers,
Fashion Critic

Hi Faust
Alexander McQueen did apologised, as well as they decided to stop this ad.
What is strange is that nobody knowed it at PPR, even François Pinault himself. Alexander McQueen seemed ti be ignorant too. Th e jewels are not from the collection, and what was said (strangely) is that the company which manufactures the collectiopn made the campaign... and they were the only one who knew it.
strange anyway...

Hey Belletrist,

Do you have a source for this info? I am curious who he apologized too, and what media printed his apology.

On the french channel Canal+ there was a documentary "habillée pour l'été" on S/S fashion shows. Just before Alexander's show, the journalist, Mademoiselle Agnes, showed the ad to François Pinault which was very surprised, in fact even his assistant which was some kind of PR for the McQ line didn't know it. After that, there was a text on the streen which was some public excuses from McQueen but it was said that he didn't decided that. In fact -as always- nobody was responsible, they also asked the director of Harper's Bazaar about that (because they published the ad) and he just said "well, you'd better ask Alexander..."

He took the most disgusting campaign technique I have ever witnessed in my entire life. Enfant terrible I can live with, but an Enfant Fascistique I can not.

Boycot this "confusion" line; that McQ is not worth it to sell any of his pieces. And by the way who wants to be associated with one of the most horrible crimes ever committed against humanity?

Can Armani be held responsible as well to be a Nazi-member ( eagle logo on his jeans???). Maybe a secret Nazi-conspiracy among fashion desingers who want to indoctrinate us with their anit-semitic and anti-arier thoughts.

I rest my case...

I wish people were as forceful as you are when it comes to nazi ideology, but I also think that the ideology muslims are propagating about freedoms in the west (in this case Europe] is very worrying ! Very often people are physically attacked and spit on by muslims because they happen to be gays holding hands or a woman wearing short skirts being called "whores' and verbally abused. Such repugnant ideology should get the same publicity because it is happening right now ! and nobody seems to care. Why is that ? Politically correct or not it shouldn't be tolerated by anyone !
